Project Management Professional Examination Preparation Bootcamp (PMP) Advantage

Credentialing is usually placed on the back burner until projects are nearing wrap up or rumor of termination. Seeking a registered education provider would be the 1st task that an aspiring PMP would need to look for in determining a training company. A registered education provider is a company that has been evaluated by PMI and complies with their strict standards on delivering top quality education that support their standards.

Most project managers have to make the investment themselves in further training or obtaining education hours to get the PMP credential which proves their worth. Usually if a career move is considered outside their existing employ with another company they would have to become credentialed. Finding time for extensive project management training may not be an option for a busy project manager. Seeking the credential substantiates the claim of understanding and proving effective application of project management concepts. Credentialing also validates dedication to the profession and proves understanding of the standard. A thorough course can be a dedicated 3 day to 5 day course covering the main areas or domains of project management and integrating the domains within process groups. Some preparatory work must be performed in advance and participants must be introduced to content in a light way before attending a 3-5 day intensive course. The training course should cover basics or what many may call fundamentals or framework. The other areas are the commonly referred to "triple threat" which is the management of scope, time and cost. Also project quality management, project risk management, project communications management and project procurement management are areas that must be covered. In addition to the management areas the way these areas are integrated and combined in a project are covered by the 5 process groups' which are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing.

The course needs to add value to the participants by clarifying the difference between applied business operations and managing projects. The course should also thoroughly address elements in the project management body of knowledge (PMBOK) pertinent to the PMP exam. The course also demystifies concepts presented on exam in objective format based on real world experience and formulates the concepts into theory suggested by PMI in PMI "isms" for the success of passing the credentialing exam.

Just like regular military bootcamp identify physically weak areas a potential soldier will encounter so does the exam prep bootcamp. The examination preparation bootcamp identifies weak areas of project management theory often assumed and misunderstood. Learning the correct theory applied in the form of case studies and role plays and exercising the brain by answering questions related to the theory directly aligns with the military bootcamp concepts which are executed through constant exercise, routine and explanations. Upon completion of the bootcamp participants and aspiring project managers will be familiar with the PMI theory of project management hence ready to pass the PMP exam. Passing the PMP certification exam proves one can handle a tough certification and join the ranks of affiliated accomplished individuals within the profession and it proves to oneself they belong.

Towards a More Effective PMP Exam Preparation

It's not easy to pass an exam - more so if it is a PMP exam. To be a project management professional (PMP) is not easy and getting a certification needs a lot of preparation. And since getting a PMP course is expensive enough, it's but proper that you religiously prepare for it when you are qualified and ready to get a certification.

Why Take the Exam?
One of the straightforward reasons of getting certified is money. It is said that those who have PMP certification will get a salary that's on the average, 14% higher than those without the title. Truly, this benefit goes beyond yourself as your loved ones can also take advantage of your bigger salary - more eat-outs, more quality time with them, and of course, more travel opportunities.

Getting the title is a benefit in itself. It's nice to have PMP beside your name. It gives your credentials a boost, and your personality an added attractiveness.

How to Prepare
No one beats a prepared soldier, so they say. Thus, you must devote a substantial amount of time for your PMP exam preparation. Here are a few tips that you can take:

1. Don't get too excited.

The trouble with some people is that they get too excited at the thought of being certified. Of course, it's but natural to feel elated at the thought of having a PMP beside your name. But this you must do without compromising your PMP exam preparation schedule. Stay away from too much thinking. Instead, focus on your study habits, your review materials, and of course, your schedule. Perhaps, the best technique in passing this test is by creating a workable PMP exam preparation schedule and sticking to it. Study first, do the celebrating later.

2. Practice.

The PMP exam is computer-based. Therefore, you must include in your PMP exam preparation checklist the task of doing a simulation. This will not only familiarize you with the method, but this will also expose you to the "actual testing environment." Psychologists contend that you will be able to remember things better if put yourself in the same environment as when you were reviewing your materials. Thus, if you do the simulation exam on the computer, you will be able to do better come actual testing.

3. Read, read, read.

How will you be able to answer your exam if you don't read? This PMP exam preparation technique even ceases to be a strategy, as this is a necessity.

Turn to online resources. The worldwide web has tons of articles and materials regarding project management. Use it. It's for free - mostly.

Refer to the PMP bible - the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK). This is the item that gets you acquainted - and deeply involved - with the nine areas of knowledge on project management.

Just like a soldier, you need to prepare before going into battle. You must be fully equipped before you sit on that computer and take that PMP exam. This, you can do, by taking the three simple suggestions discussed above.

If your preparation is a hasty one or you're over-confident of your experience to trouble-shoot actual work-related problems, you might be in for a surprise.

The test questions do not implicitly demand a bookish answer but will test your comprehension of the fundamental theories in project management - no matter what the professional field, the theories and the interlacing applications are the same.

Be ready for 35 contact hours of training focused on project management. If you are about to start studying for your Project Management Professional (PMP) exam, you'll want to make sure your toolkit is bursting with things to help you on the journey to becoming a PMP. There are so many options to consider when looking at the study materials on the market that it can be difficult to know where to start.

First, don't be overwhelmed by the choice. The tools that your colleagues and classmates are using may not be the right ones for you. How do you learn best? Choose study materials that will help you prepare for PMP certification in a way that best suits your learning style. You'll also want to consider your budget. Don't feel that you have to buy really expensive exam preparation tools. There are products on the market that are both efficient and cost effective. Reading what other students have to say about the study tools they use can also be helpful: check out independent review sites.

Still stuck for where to start? Here's my guide to the top 12 most popular PMP exam preparation tools.

1. PMI's Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide)

The PMBOK Guide is the workbench of PMP exam preparation tools. It's the foundation that everything else is built on. This is the most "popular" study material simply because everybody has to read it for the exam! Remember that PMI members get a PDF copy for free.

2. PMP Exam Study Guides

These are also known as PMP exam prep books. They cover the same materials as the PMBOK Guide but in more accessible language. They often explain the concepts in ways that are easier to understand and to learn.

3. PMP Exam Courses

Training courses come in many varieties. You could attend a course online or in a classroom. You could study at your own pace or with an instructor. You could choose a boot-camp or to study over many weeks. Look for a PMP exam course that will give you the required 35 contact hours.

4. Exam Simulators and Free Questions

These are the torch in your toolkit, helping you shine a light on your weaker areas. Taking sample exams via an exam simulator will help you assess your readiness for the real thing. You can find free questions online, but these only go so far, so be sure to sign up for a professionally created simulator from a PMI Registered Education Provider. Some PMP exam study guides also come with a CD or DVD which contain questions.

5. Podcasts

Podcasts can be in audio or video format. A PMP podcast is very easy to carry around with you and has the benefit that you can listen to or watch it wherever you are. Some of these are so elaborate that they actually fall into PMI's Category F ("distance learning") for PMP Exam preparation courses and even offer 35 contact hours.

6. Flash cards

Flash cards allow you to study and memorize the concepts that you need to know for the exam. You can make your own and carry them with you at all times, so you can test yourself in spare moments. Another alternative is electronic cards that you can use on your phone.

7. Apps

Apps are becoming more and more popular and there are lots to choose from. For example, there are games that teach you the ITTOs, there are apps that teach concepts with mnemonics and others that test you with questions. Check out the iTunes app store for additional ideas.

8. Formula study guides

Study guides for PMP formulas are a precision tool. They will help you review and learn the formulas required for the exam in a way that makes it easier to recall them under pressure.

9. Lessons Learned

Don't underestimate what you can learn from others. Talking to colleagues who already have their PMP certification can be an invaluable resource. If you can't talk to anyone, read what others have to say about how they studied, what they studied and what their experience was like. You could also get a mentor to help you prepare, and learn from his or her experiences too.

10. PMI Chapter

This is the spirit level of the toolkit, helping you stay centered and motivated. Tap into your colleagues at your local PMI Chapter. They may have a study group that you could join. At a minimum, you'll be able to talk to PMPs about how they managed their journey to PMP certification.

11. Brain dump sheets

A brain dump sheet is a way to recall information under exam conditions. It's a personal study tool that you can shape to fit the way you study best, and it's becoming more popular. Create a sheet of paper with all the key information on and then practice writing it out until it's second nature. Then you simply have to do that in the exam and all the key information will be at your fingertips!

12. Internet forums

There is lots of information on internet forums - and many of them are free. Chat to other students about how their exam preparation is going, or ask advice from seasoned PMPs.

Whatever tools you choose, it is important to study regularly. Try to spend some time on your PMP studies every day. The study materials you buy should reflect the fact that you'll be using them on a daily basis, so that might influence what you invest in. Tools like electronic versions of flash cards, books and guides are very portable and can be used whenever you have a spare moment.

Finally, studying for your PMP is a difficult job, so choose PMP materials that you enjoy using and find fun! That will make your revision more enjoyable and the PMP credential an achievable target.

Complete and high-quality online courses are available for as little as $100, while to the classes in person have a teacher whose salary should be paid. Therefore expect to pay much more.

Ask your employer if they offer a choice of scholarships and also get in touch with your local chapter of PMI to know if there are reduced rates for members in courses offered by the chapter.

Step 3: Select education of PMI registered providers only

One of the determining criteria most important is that the course should be offered to you by a PMI registered education provider (r.b.p.). Courses are offered a variety of companies and the certification of r.b.p. and logo ensures that the course is still PMI established quality criteria.

Step 4: Verify that the Principal Instructor is PMP certification

Much will benefit the course if the main instructor is PMP certification. Ensures that the coach has the experience of preparing and taking the test himself or herself. In this way, the instructor will be more capable of helping to erase all the blocks on the road in preparation for the PMP exam.

Step 5: Make sure that the course is based on the most recent PMBOK Guide

You must also ensure that the course follows the latest edition of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide). Review is largely based on the current version of this standard.

Step 6: Ensure that you will receive 35 contact hours for the purpose of the course evaluation

One of the PMI certification requirements is that all applicants should be at least 35 hours of project management education contact. Without this you may not take the examination. Make sure that the courses to consider of offer a certificate of completion, showing at least 35 contact hours.

PMI requires that all providers online course test your knowledge at the end of the course through an "end of the course evaluation". Therefore, if you select a class online and they are not tested before receiving your certificate, the certificate is useless.

Step 7: Review these criteria for each course and provider

Courses that consider, take into consideration also the following:

PMP exam preparation

Does never come in your mind should be how to prepare for the PMP exam? Some say that the PMP exam is quite difficult. If you take this view by the heart, you will only feel nervous and afraid that wish not to take the PMP Exam at all!

We should think positive. Nothing will happen if we just by still worrying. We have to fight hard if we want to achieve things that we want. As the saying goes, "do if others can, why not us?" Everything you need to do is practice. A dancer before a performance, practiced his steps. A singer trained his voice before singing on stage. A practical basketball player their outbreaks before the Championship. And for a PMP student, he studied before the PMP exam.

But prior to the preparation, you must also ensure that you are a PMI member. There are many benefits if you are a member as PMBOKs, Online access to business and project management books, discounts to take the examination and many more. After that, you are ready to make the preparation.

PRAYER

Before you do anything, if you believe in prayer, you must always start the review and the preparation with a prayer. This will give encouragement and confidence that can actually pass the test. I also believe in prayer. It gives me the idea that God is always with me to help me and guide me in the Studio.

BOOKS, ARTICLES AND OTHER RESOURCES

Articles and other resources PMP that you think can help you seek. There is much in store. You must choose the books that are easy to understand and what you think they benefit most. You should also practice reading. It really helps a lot to increase our knowledge and understanding about many things. It should be his daily habit of reading.

TRAINING AND SEMINARS

Listening to the big bosses of project and project management experts also is a great way to study. You can learn from their experiences and ideas to take the PMP exam. And these ideas could be useful for you.

QUESTIONS

Example questions PMP for testing are scattered in the network. You can practice with him. Some articles with example questions also have explanations with their correct answers. These questions can help you to give a little of what will really come out during the examination.

And my advice to you, have fun. Learning is better when you're happy with it. Love what you do makes you think about things in a positive way. Be happy always also helps you to easily understand what is studying. You can easily apply what has been learned if you're happy. Its success depends on your state of mind. If we do things by force, who had a hard time all he has learned internalization of. Everything will be good for nothing. Also, believe in yourself that you can. They have done all that but without confidence, he will go to waste. This confidence builds up confidence in it. Therefore, mood! The PMP exam is not really difficult. Just a little effort, and probably will.

Some of the aspects of our preparation for the PMP certification exam could be:

1. Managing our time:

Most of us have a time frame for preparing for the exam. So it becomes all the more important for us to plan well so that we could utilize our time well while preparing for the exam.

We could look at the following issues to manage our time better:

Current weak areas:

We could ask ourselves questions like,

What are my current weak areas?

What are the sites, books, forums which would help me in getting help on these issues?

I received a lot of help from sites like deepfriedbrain during my preparatory days. I found answers to many difficult concepts and issues. When we are running short of time, these sites are quite useful as we don't have to spend too much time looking for answers to difficult questions.

Prioritizing our preparation

It is important to prioritize our study to manage our time for preparation.

For instance, I always feel that, if given a second chance, I would first go through all the 42 processes and look at the questions like what is the process all about, why is it important, when is it performed, etc. This would give me a better clarity on the processes as a whole and I would be able to see the connectivity between processes. I would then focus on Input, Output, Tools and techniques for each of these processes and would probably have a better understanding of the ITTO'S.

Change of plans:

It is quite possible that we may feel the need to change our plans as we progress in our preparation. This may be quite frustrating at times as we may feel that a new plan might take up a lot of your time. But we need not be be hesitant in changing our plans when it is really required, be it solving a few more papers reading a few more books, spending some more time on important concept or reading PMBOK once more.

What is really important here is that preparation for PMP needs to be as thorough as possible so that we have a lot of areas to score in the actual exam.

2. Managing our study:

We may need to manage our study while preparing for the exam. Some of the issues that we may need to consider are:

Books/Reading material:

It is important for us to identify the books, ebooks, online articles, PMBOK guide, preparatory courses and all other reading material which could be useful for us.

There are some really good books available in the market e. g Rita Mulcahy, Andy Crowe, Headfirst Labs, etc. Initially we could stick on to a single book to avoid confusion. Later on we could read as much as possible to develop a deeper understanding of processes.

Reading PMBOK:

It is very important for us to understand the concepts covered in PMBOK. We might feel that the entire exercise of reading PMBOK might be quite boring and time consuming as the difficulty level for a lot of concepts are really high. But we could always look out for clarification in some good books by Andy Crowe, Headfirst etc where the concepts usually comes with a lot of real life scenarios and graphic illustrations which makes things easy.

But we need to understand that the actual exam is all about real life scenarios revolving around the concepts covered in PMBOK.

PMP examination specification:

It is very important to know the Objectives of the exam. we need to take some time off to think about all the information that we might have come across while handling all our projects in our professional life. This is very important for the actual exam. PMI doesn't keep it a secret and it allows us to download the specifications for the exam( for free). These specifications allow us to determine what the exam is driving at. While preparing for the exam we could keep checking these specifications to see if we are missing out on something.

Practise tests:

This exam is all about practise. We need to practise as many practise test papers as possible. Initially we could even buy some practise tests from any one of the known vendors like pmstudy, pmprepcast, simplilearn, etc. Later on we could practise as many free tests as possible. Most of the vendors offer free tests which are also useful. Even the tests which have smaller number of questions could be practised (20, 25, 50, etc).

Practise tests help us in multiple ways

They help us in understanding what the question is really trying to convey. Once we start realizing the underlying concept behind each question, the answers are more evident. The more we practise, the more quickly we are able to understand the underlying concept behind every question. This is really important in the actual exam because it enables a person to saves a lot of his time.

During our preparation, we could use these practise tests to gauge how much are we prepared for the exam. At times they could even be morale boosters because, if we score well in a few of them, we get the necessary confidence in our preparation for the exam.

Scoring Question and answers:

You may need to focus on all those areas which which are scoring like ITTO questions, process related questions(like what comes next after this process), Formula related questions, etc. These are questions which could fetch you some sure shot marks if you are able to study and understand the underlying concepts well.

How much do you need to prepare before you take up the actual exam?

This is a question which we all might ask ourselves while preparing for the exam. None of us ever feel we are prepared enough for the exam because with each practise test, we get a lot of questions which we are not confident about. There could be a lot of arguments about how much do we need to score before we actually take up the exam. Some of us might feel a score of 60-80% might be enough, or some of us might even feel that a score of 90 % is required considering the difficulty level in the actual exam.

What we could really do is take up some practise tests once we feel that we are prepared for the exam. We could then check our first time scores for each of the tests and share these scores with our mentors Or people who have successfully take up these exams. We could even share them with our trainers at the REP's where we had taken up our PMP training, or some experienced PMP trainers whom we know. Based on their feedback, we could schedule our exams.

Revise:

It is very important for us to revise at least about 2-3 times before we actually take up the exam. Revising the contents ensures that we don't really forget what we had so painstakingly prepared in the last few months. We need to remember here that it has taken a lot of time, efforts and expenditure on our part to prepare for the exam. So we need to revise well.

3. Managing our anxiety/concerns/fears

Most of us have our own anxieties, fears and concerns associated with this exam. We need to handle them and not ignore them. They are probably trying to convey some important facts. like

. I am weak in communication management

. I do not have the time to go through all this

. Will I be able to really pass the exam.

. How much do I need to actually pass the exam

. I am unable to understand some concepts in PMBOK

. What if I fail in the actual exam even though I score well in practise tests.

We need to make a list of all these concerns while we are preparing for the exam. We could then come up with a plan or strategy to handle each of these issues.

For instance if we feel we are weak in some areas, we could list out all those sites which could give truckloads of information on them.

4. Managing our actual exam:

We need to consider the following issues about the actual exam

. There might be questions on the exam which we aren't comfortable about

. What if the first 10 questions are not known to us

. What if we are able to solve all the questions but they are all time consuming and we are not sure whether we would be able to solve all of those questions.

. Can we manage the entire 4 hours without breaks. If no, then how often do we need to take a break

. How many questions do i actually need to solve before every break?

. Is it important for us to answer all questions?

. While we are giving the exam, the exam centre might have a video recording of the entire procedure. How comfortable would we be in those circumstances. Will that have an impact on the overall time required for our exam

Once we consider all the above issues, we realize that we need to be well prepared for the exam and that we need to have a battle plan for the exam. so we could have our own strategy for handling the actual exam.

I had come up with my own comfortable strategy for the exam.

I had worked out a plan where I would take my first of 5 minutes after 75 questions.

My second break after 75 questions.

My third break after 50 questions and then:

Revise my answers

This way I could complete my exam in a span of 3 hours and got a complete 1 hour to revise. Having a battle plan also helped me to avoid spending too much time for a particular question and I was able to handle the uncertainties of my exam, better

This exam is all about Planning, Preparation and Practise. And we need to do that well.

All the best for your exam.

Thanks & Regards
