Project Management Professional Examination Preparation Bootcamp (PMP) Advantage

Credentialing is usually placed on the back burner until projects are nearing wrap up or rumor of termination. Seeking a registered education provider would be the 1st task that an aspiring PMP would need to look for in determining a training company. A registered education provider is a company that has been evaluated by PMI and complies with their strict standards on delivering top quality education that support their standards.

Most project managers have to make the investment themselves in further training or obtaining education hours to get the PMP credential which proves their worth. Usually if a career move is considered outside their existing employ with another company they would have to become credentialed. Finding time for extensive project management training may not be an option for a busy project manager. Seeking the credential substantiates the claim of understanding and proving effective application of project management concepts. Credentialing also validates dedication to the profession and proves understanding of the standard. A thorough course can be a dedicated 3 day to 5 day course covering the main areas or domains of project management and integrating the domains within process groups. Some preparatory work must be performed in advance and participants must be introduced to content in a light way before attending a 3-5 day intensive course. The training course should cover basics or what many may call fundamentals or framework. The other areas are the commonly referred to "triple threat" which is the management of scope, time and cost. Also project quality management, project risk management, project communications management and project procurement management are areas that must be covered. In addition to the management areas the way these areas are integrated and combined in a project are covered by the 5 process groups' which are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing.

The course needs to add value to the participants by clarifying the difference between applied business operations and managing projects. The course should also thoroughly address elements in the project management body of knowledge (PMBOK) pertinent to the PMP exam. The course also demystifies concepts presented on exam in objective format based on real world experience and formulates the concepts into theory suggested by PMI in PMI "isms" for the success of passing the credentialing exam.

Just like regular military bootcamp identify physically weak areas a potential soldier will encounter so does the exam prep bootcamp. The examination preparation bootcamp identifies weak areas of project management theory often assumed and misunderstood. Learning the correct theory applied in the form of case studies and role plays and exercising the brain by answering questions related to the theory directly aligns with the military bootcamp concepts which are executed through constant exercise, routine and explanations. Upon completion of the bootcamp participants and aspiring project managers will be familiar with the PMI theory of project management hence ready to pass the PMP exam. Passing the PMP certification exam proves one can handle a tough certification and join the ranks of affiliated accomplished individuals within the profession and it proves to oneself they belong.

Learning About PMP Process Groups, Knowledge Areas

Many factories and businesses are working with Project Management Process. When working for this there are many questions that go through the mind. There is Project Management Process Groups and Knowledge Areas. It could be difficult to learn the difference between these elements.

When it comes to Project Management Process groups there are several groups. There is Initiating Processing Groups that means there is a requirement when it comes to defining project phases and new projects. When planning is underway these are Planning Groups, for examples. The PMBOK Guide is a requirement when planning for PMP certification exam. This has the information that is needed to learn everything required to pass the exam and earn PMP certification. There are five Process Groups according to the Fourth Edition of the PMBOK Guidebook. This includes: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing. These elements for the groups are required completely for each project that is underway.

It varies from project to project when it comes to the implication for the process. This is because most projects involve different tasks and different risk levels. Working with processing groups allows the project manager working with the project more guidance. It helps apply Project Management knowledge to the project as well as important skills allowing them to meet objectives. There is a plan for all the groups to meet at a common point while still working at different levels.

Now, it is time to look at knowledge areas when it comes to PMP. These are specialization areas and they are defined in the fourth edition of the PMBOK Guidebook. These management knowledge areas include: project integration, project scope, project time, project cost, project quality, project human resource, project communications, and project risk and project procurement. This is plain and simple as an explanation for knowledge areas when it comes to comparing it to process groups.

When it comes to knowledge areas the PMBOK is a great way to learn more. The same is true for the process groups. It maps out five process groups and nine knowledge areas in "42 Project Management Processes". Both of these elements are important to PMP. Many feel they work together to create success when working with PMP. When studying to earn PMP everyone will learn these elements. Everything they learn they will not only input on the exam, but they will deal with it routinely on the job.

Knowledge management and PMP go hand in hand to ensure stability of profits and intelligent manpower that is qualified to lead the teams during project implementation.

7 Criteria for Selecting Your PMP Exam Simulator

The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a must-have for many project managers. It demonstrates your ability as a project manager to your current and prospective employers, and can help you take the next step up the corporate ladder. That said, it is not an easy road, and preparing for the exam can be a time-consuming and stressful business.

As adults, we don't take exams that often. Part of the nerves and stress relating to the PMP exam comes from not knowing what to expect. You can prepare for the exam by revising the material from the knowledge areas of the PMBOK® Guide, but that should be only part of your preparation. You can also practice what the exam will be like by working through sample questions in a realistic, online environment. A PMP exam simulator provides this. Sitting sample tests with an exam simulator will help you face the real exam confidently.

Here are the 7 steps to consider when selecting a PMP exam simulator to best suit your needs:

1. Select PMI Registered Education Providers only

One of the most important criteria is making sure you choose a PMP exam simulator from a Registered Education Provider (R.E.P). A R.E.P. is an organization approved by PMI, and the certification and logo shows you that the product meets established quality standards.

2. Compare the price to your budget

Studying for the PMP exam can be expensive when you include training materials, books and the exam fees. You will probably have a budget for your PMP journey, so compare the prices of PMP exam simulators and select one that provides the highest level of quality for a price you can afford.

3. Ensure that the simulator is based on the most recent PMBOK® Guide

Don't waste time using an exam simulator that isn't based on the most recent PMBOK® Guide! It sounds simple, but be sure to check that the PMP exam simulator you are looking at is actually based on the latest version. If it isn't, you could waste a lot of time on questions (and answers) that will not accurately reflect what the exam will be like.

4. Establish the simulator content

Select a PMP exam simulator that has lots of questions. Lots. After all, you'll be studying for 8-12 weeks, so you could be using the simulator often. It makes the exam prep too easy if the simulator presents you with same questions over again, so opt for a tool that offers you a great variety to test your abilities fully.

While you are looking into the questions find out who wrote them. Choose a simulator where the questions have been written by a group of PMPs. This ensures that you will be seeing questions from a variety of people, which have most likely been peer-reviewed to ensure quality.

5. Check it has full exam mode

The PMP exam simulator you choose should have a full exam mode. This means that you can take a practice exam in advance of the real thing. It should be very realistic, with the option to mark questions for review, as that is what you will be able to do during the actual exam. Ideally, you will want to choose a simulator that enables you to take the tests as many times as you like.

You'll also want to check that the questions are presented in the same proportion as in the real exam. For example, about a third of the questions in the real exam are from Executing a Project. Your choice of PMP exam simulator should do the same to make the practice exams as realistic as possible.

6. Check it offers learning mode

Learning mode in an exam simulator is a good option to support your day-to-day studies during your PMP exam preparation. You can use learning mode to review various areas of the syllabus. It offers you hints for questions if you are struggling, and will even show you the answer so you know what you need to review. A good PMP exam simulator will also explain the logic behind the questions, and point you in the right direction if you make a mistake.

7. Establish the level of technical support

PMP exam simulators can be web-based or available to download and install on your computer. Either way, find out what sort of technical support the company offers. Ideally, look for a company that provides help when things go wrong through a forum, FAQ on their website, or a 'contact us' page. In the worst case, you might want to return the product completely, so find out if they offer a full refund if you are not satisfied.

Work through these 7 steps for every PMP exam simulator that you are considering, and you will find a product that meets your needs. Having chosen a PMP exam simulator, you can use it to fully prepare for the exam, and you will enter the exam room knowing what to expect. Good luck!

Project Management Certification - And Other Important Project Management Fields

After taking the PMP exam, the certificate you'll receive opens up different titles and fields concerning Project Management and will help you earn a lot within a year. But if you want to excel more and acquire greater career in this path, you would surely need additional and more training for that. And it is a fact that receiving a Project Management certificate gives you a quick path to success as you start your career with PM.

Project management professionals get a higher salary a year in big countries such as Germany, Australia and United States. This is because they are the ones who are responsible for the life and improvement of the business. They run the project, and how they run it determines whether to be success or failure. It's up to them how the project will and should come out. But, fortunately, they won't be doing this alone. They got help with other people and group themselves on what we called 'project team'. They communicate and give each other's ideas on how to complete the process. PMPs assigned them with different tasks within the project and manage them. But, they won't be able to handle multi-task projects without knowledge on how to handle them and it would be through proper training. Getting the PMP certificate won't satisfy the need to complete it, but further training on how to manage them.

Project Risk Management Professional

This job is a very important job for a PMP. It saves a lot of money for the company or helps them to lose it for they are the ones who are responsible for locating the risks of every project they face. They sort out the process to see if this project will hit the market, or take away the unnecessary data for the project for better understanding. And doing this work requires a team and, the team and you should take extensive training for that.

Program Management Professional

There is also what we called Program Management Professionals. They are required to know every aspects of their field. They should have the knowledge of every Project Management field so that they would be able to monitor other PMPs work if it really works or not. They are the ones who helped Project Managers to know what to do with the project, gives best strategies in doing the process and also, to be always on track with the deadline. They also monitor their every performance to know the time span been used, what needs to be fixed if there is any, when they should pass the project, and many others.

If you are looking for the best Project Management certification, it should have all of these qualities mention above. The program for this certification should be able to teach these important things a Project Manager should learn. But even it got popular, only a few took this job. Not all are giften with leadership and managin. Yet, these jobs are really important and very useful in our community. However, it greatly helps in the improvement of our high-technological society. So, choose the best PMP certification to earn great knowledge on how to manage multi-task projects and other complication a Project Manager should works.

What PMP Questions Should I Prepare For On The PMP Exam?

What PMP questions will you find on the PMP certification exam? Just remember what the main focus of the PMP exam is--the Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is the most widely recognized and respected credential in the field of project management! The PMP exam was created to weed out applicants. The exam tests knowledge, concept application and situation analysis. The Project Management Institute (PMI) tests over six different areas, and the test is broken down in the following way:

Below is a table that breaks down what will be on the PMP test.

PM Process | Percent of Questions

Project Initiating | 11

Project Planning | 23

Project Executing | 27

Project Monitoring and Controlling | 21

Project Closing | 9

Professional and Social Responsibility | 9

Be aware that the PMP Exam Questions are going to include:

1. Knowledge application questions- The PMI has a text known as the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK guide). Knowing what is in the PMBOK guide and being able to apply those concepts to real work are two different things. Many of the PMP questions are aimed at application and not simple knowledge.

2. Will contain application questions to real situations- things like, you are a Project Manager working for the XYZ corporation, you have the following situation, what is the first thing you should do? Which may be hard to answer if you haven't used Project Management tools or used PMI processes on your projects.

3. There are a number of formula discussed in the PMBOK guide, but only 8 to 10 questions will need formulas.

4. However 10-12 could be earned value questions (not all of those will require solving for a value).

5. Most of the acronyms will be spelled out, so learn the full names of PMP terms.

6. The exam has 25 pre-release questions, which are routinely cycled into the exam and some old exam questions are dropped.

7. It is estimated that 50% or so who don't pass the exam, do not pass it because they have no project management training that uses PMI terminology and methodology.

8. The toughest knowledge areas are Framework, Integration, Procurement, Risk, and Time.

9. The toughest process groups are Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Professional and Social Responsibility.

Remember, before you can take the exam you need to pre-qualify:

10. If you have a Bachelors degree in any subject - You need 35 hours of PM education (known as contact hours), and 4,500 hours of PM experience over three years in the last six years. OR if you do not have a Bachelors degree you need 7,500 hours of experience over at-least five out of the last eight years. If you need contact hours look into PMI approved training such as PM PrepCast by Cornelius Fichtner, or a full PMP Bootcamp such as the PMPerfect On-Demand Bootcamp.

Preparing for the exam can be a grueling process, but it can be made easier if you brake it down as if it were a project, and work at it consistently every week. Learning more about the PMP Questions through a course or guide will make taking the PMP exam much easier.

If you aren't sure what to study, then roll all of your training into one, with a new concept, an On-Demand PMP Bootcamp.

Elroy King has been a project manager for many years and has seen what a difference PMP certification of team members has made on project success.

PMI Certifications and Their Value

The goal of many project management professionals all over the globe is to climb the ladder of success and do great things, challenging themselves with various projects and be recognized for their dedication and effort. Obtaining PMI certifications can satisfy these needs of many ambitious professionals.

Wherever you go, people will know who you are and what you can do because PMI certifications are recognized globally. Businesses around the world will look upon you highly because you've succeeded at what many in their industry have not and they can trust that you will be serious and dedicated to the projects they assign you.

Numerous applicants will not be eligible for the credentials until they have proven that they're capable to lead and direct in project management situations. Therefore, applicants must have the required amount of education and experience prior to taking the test.

Besides being globally acknowledged for your project management abilities, PMI certifications will also benefit you in various ways.

Your knowledge will increase and your project management skills will improve due to all the training and discipline that you allowed yourself to go through for the PMI certifications. Your earnings may also increase because you've become a distinguished professional. Your self esteem will reach new heights while you and your colleagues look upon yourself with high regard.

There are 5 PMI certifications available depending on your education and experience.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) - This credential is for candidates who contribute as team members and subject matter experts. They are responsible for individual project tasks in their area of expertise.

PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP) - The PMI-SP is a professional project scheduling manager.

PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) - The PMI-RMP is a professional project risk manager.

Project Management Professional (PMP) - The PMP leads and directs teams to bring the project to fruition.

Program Management Professional (PgMP) - The PgMP is responsible for multiple projects.

PMI certifications each have educational and experiential requirements that must be met prior to taking the exams. For example, PMP certification requirements include a high school diploma and 5 years of experience with a minimum of 7,500 hours of leading and directing project tasks and 35 hours of formal project management education. Applicants with a four year degree need 3 years of project management experience with a minimum of 4,500 hours of leading and directing project tasks along with the 35 hours of project management education.

As you can see, meeting the requirements will take a lot of time, hard work and dedication on your part. You will also have to prepare for the lengthy exams by studying hard and taking exam simulations and signing up for training courses.

Getting a PMI certification is not easy. However, becoming a credential holder tells a lot about who you are, what you've done and what you're capable of. It shows that while you were climbing the latter of success, even though there was a higher level of step that seemed out of reach, you persevered and attained your goal because you understood how important that next step would be for yourself and for the projects that companies will entrust you with. PMI certifications are not for everyone and that's why not everyone is certified. It's a badge that you must earn.

Towards a More Effective PMP Exam Preparation

It's not easy to pass an exam - more so if it is a PMP exam. To be a project management professional (PMP) is not easy and getting a certification needs a lot of preparation. And since getting a PMP course is expensive enough, it's but proper that you religiously prepare for it when you are qualified and ready to get a certification.

Why Take the Exam?
One of the straightforward reasons of getting certified is money. It is said that those who have PMP certification will get a salary that's on the average, 14% higher than those without the title. Truly, this benefit goes beyond yourself as your loved ones can also take advantage of your bigger salary - more eat-outs, more quality time with them, and of course, more travel opportunities.

Getting the title is a benefit in itself. It's nice to have PMP beside your name. It gives your credentials a boost, and your personality an added attractiveness.

How to Prepare
No one beats a prepared soldier, so they say. Thus, you must devote a substantial amount of time for your PMP exam preparation. Here are a few tips that you can take:

1. Don't get too excited.

The trouble with some people is that they get too excited at the thought of being certified. Of course, it's but natural to feel elated at the thought of having a PMP beside your name. But this you must do without compromising your PMP exam preparation schedule. Stay away from too much thinking. Instead, focus on your study habits, your review materials, and of course, your schedule. Perhaps, the best technique in passing this test is by creating a workable PMP exam preparation schedule and sticking to it. Study first, do the celebrating later.

2. Practice.

The PMP exam is computer-based. Therefore, you must include in your PMP exam preparation checklist the task of doing a simulation. This will not only familiarize you with the method, but this will also expose you to the "actual testing environment." Psychologists contend that you will be able to remember things better if put yourself in the same environment as when you were reviewing your materials. Thus, if you do the simulation exam on the computer, you will be able to do better come actual testing.

3. Read, read, read.

How will you be able to answer your exam if you don't read? This PMP exam preparation technique even ceases to be a strategy, as this is a necessity.

Turn to online resources. The worldwide web has tons of articles and materials regarding project management. Use it. It's for free - mostly.

Refer to the PMP bible - the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK). This is the item that gets you acquainted - and deeply involved - with the nine areas of knowledge on project management.

Just like a soldier, you need to prepare before going into battle. You must be fully equipped before you sit on that computer and take that PMP exam. This, you can do, by taking the three simple suggestions discussed above.

Attitude and Practical Aptitude and Your PMP Exam Preparation

If you are determined to get a PMP certification, then you must have the right attitude matched with practical attitude to have a stress-free PMP Exam Preparation.

Why Attitude?

Any passer or flunker of the of the PMP Exam will tell you that the PMP Exam Preparation should be, the be all and end all, before you take the computer based PMP examination. If your preparation is a hasty one or you're over-confident of your experience to trouble-shoot actual work-related problems, you might be in for a surprise.

The test questions do not implicitly demand a bookish answer but will test your comprehension of the fundamental theories in project management - no matter what the professional field, the theories and the interlacing applications are the same.

Be ready for 35 contact hours of training focused on project management. A reliable PMP Exam Preparation demands this before giving out the completion certification as a qualification for the actual examination. You should have the attitude to actively participate in the learning process by seriously giving time to study and absorb the lessons.

If the pace of the lessons is too fast, don't be timid. Ask the people giving the PMP Exam Preparation to consider your pace; they will be willing to do this because their top priority is the student's success during the exams. There will be moments of boredom despite your willingness to go through the lessons - but with the right attitude, you can redirect you're your efforts to stay interested; after all, you invest time, money, and effort for your career.

Practical Aptitude

The PMP Exam Preparation tests your aptitude to respond to problems in the workplace. If you are naturally gifted with the ability to evaluate tricky situations and can assess how limited resources and manpower can be harnessed to get the desired effect, you will appreciate the lessons for the PMP exam. GIFTED OR NOT, you can still learn more during the preparations.

Another requirement spelled out is comprehension of written and verbal instructions. All instructions are useless if you cannot immediately understand instructions. Managers must have this practical aptitude to succeed in following and giving instructions. During the intensive preparation, this aptitude is tested to the limits.

As you ride along the lessons get more information and do research on the topics given to you. It helps to have more ideas from various experts in different fields. Perhaps, if you do take the PMP Exam Preparation, you have more ammunition to understand the whole preparation.

When Doing Self-Study

Discipline is the key to a successful preparation. Your attitude and aptitude makes it easy for you to be dedicated and disciplined. The long hours of study, the research, and absorbing all the lessons can drain your brain thus you need all the discipline you can get from within you.

There will be practice test to challenge to do better with different lessons as you progress with your PMP Exam Preparation. To get the best from your preparation and to ace those practice tests and eventually the big one, go for an institution that that meets the PMI's rigid requirements. A Registered Education Provider logo should alert you that you are getting one of the best - now that is attitude and aptitude at work.

For your PMP Exam Preparation get a PMP Course that can help you succeed with the PMP Exam. At ThreeO.ca, you are assured of topnotch lessons and instructors.

PMP Simulation - Recommended Study for Passing PMP Exam

Preparing for your PMP certainly takes some dedicated study time. Learning the theory of the Project Management Body of Knowledge as well as understanding the practical application means a thorough reading and understanding of the PMBOK manual. Reading the PMBOK manual alone, however, will not guarantee a passing mark for the PMP examination.

There are several PMP exam preparation tools and resources available commercially as well as some free resources on the internet.

When studying for the PMP certification, there is one study method that should be considered as part of your study regime and that is PMP simulation. PMP exam simulation software provides two distinct benefits in your study:

Familiarity with sample PMP questions.

This aspect of PMP simulation is highly valuable. PMP exam simulation software provides the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the multiple choice format of questions as well as having to select from more than one potential answer. This really develops your critical analysis skills.

Although it seems obvious, one of the keys to success in passing PMP test is reading and understanding the question as well as reading and understanding the available options. It is surprising how many mistakes are made by simply misreading or making assumptions about the questions. These are mistakes that could be eliminated by simply taking the time to understand the question and what it is asking for as well as fully comprehending the available option for the answer to the question. PMP exam simulators host a large number of PMP examination questions that will enable you to develop excellent familiarity with the PMP question format and excellent experience in applying your question comprehension and critical analysis skills to select the correct answer.

Opportunity to simulate exam conditions.

The other main benefit of PMP simulation, in addition to developing experience with the PMP examination questions is the opportunity to simulate PMP exam conditions. This includes the timing of the questions that is available and to some extent the heightened feeling of anxiety that you may experience in the exam situation.

With 200 questions to answer in a four hour period, it is imperative that your pmp study includes as aspect of practising the relatively fast pace required for answering the exam questions. PMP simulation provides the necessary experience of reading, synthesizing, analysing and responding in the short timeframe required, repetitively. PMP simulators will usually provide many hundreds of sample PMP examination questions as well as several PMP preparation exams.

Guidelines Before Taking The PMP Exam

Before getting a PMP certificate, you must first take a Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification Exam. But, as we all know, this exam gives us another stressful responsibility. This is also the reason why most professionals who practices in this field didn't take this important exam. To avoid that situation, here are some fundamental guidelines you can learn in order to help lessen up your fears and obtain greater possibility to pass the test. Let us start with the basic requirements.

PMP Basics and the Exam:

First, you should know that the exam is composed of 200 multiple-choice questions - contains 4 possible answers. You are only given 4 hours to finish answering all of them.

Second, there is 40% of the total exam called "situational questions" which tests your ability to solve certain given problems even surrounded by a stressful environment and be able to find a solution as fast as you could.

Third, the PMI (Project Management Institute) requires all applicants to take at least 35 hours of Project Management Training before they are qualified to take the test.

And here are some guidelines that may help you have greater chances in passing the test. Also, remember that you can't achieve anything without hard work, determination and perseverance. Set your minds upon the reason of taking this exam: to test your skills, knowledge and abilities in project management according to the PMI's standard.

PMP Guidelines:

Expand your knowledge - as you take a PMP Exam Prep Course, you will see that you are required to read more books and other resources available. It should be closely related to the training you have taken. However, most courses associate materials specifically made just for that course. There are online programs or PMP prep course who offers PMP material which fits for 35 hours of study, so, it is not that hard to search for places where to take the course.

Be calm - the PMI ordered you to have full training from institutions which have their approval and provides the PMBOK manual to easily find the answers to the exam. With these, the PMI is making sure that you will pass the test and comes out to be an expert in project management. You can feel at ease, they even lowered the passing grade just for you to be able to get the required score.

Best answer - the technique in answering the test is to find the best suitable answer. You might encounter a question that has 2 possible answers. Think thoroughly. See what answer fits the particular question or problem. Always choose the best. To be easy for you to check the right answer, during your training, search for exam simulators. These are mock exams that help you practice answering to familiarize the pattern of the exam.

Memorize - in the PMBOK manual, you will not only learn words, but also formulas and acronyms. You need to understand and memorize them for they will come out in the exam. If possible, use your own tactics in memorizing. You could jot them down in a piece of paper and keep on repeating them until it store in your brain.

Answer - during the exam, there is a rule that if you left at least 1 question unanswered, it will be deducted to your total points. So, make sure that you will answer all of questions. Just start answering with the easier ones and go back to the difficult questions. If you lack of time, use the guessing method. There are still chances to get the correct answers than suffer with deduction.

Do your best in the exam and as you follow these tips, with matching diligence, perseverance and dedication to pass; you will surely obtain the PMP Certification.

How to Become a PMP Certified Project Manager

One of the best questions I like to be asked is, "How do I get certified as a project manager?" I love to talk with someone who is committed to PM. However, there's a little confusion in the market about what qualifies as certification, and what's required to become certified. There are universities or colleges that offer a PM certificate, and therefore people think maybe they become certified in those programs, but that's not actually professional certification. There are two certifying bodies: the PRINCE2 organization, which we will talk about in another article, and the Project Management Institute, which I want to focus on here.

Where Can You find the Criteria for Certification?

The Project Management Institute, better known as PMI, and on the web at pmi.org, is a certifying entity that offers a credential called the Project Management Professional. Managers will often follow their name with PMP; this means they are certified. To qualify for the credential, applicants must meet a number of requirements. I often get calls from people who want to change fields and work as a project manager but don't have certification. It actually works in reverse; to be eligible for certification PMI requires that project management experience before you can earn your certification. That's where some of the confusion really begins. The clearest point of reference you should always look to is the most current version of the Project Management Professional Handbook, available for download at PMI.org. It details everything you need to know about certification-how to get it, how to qualify, and once you do become PM certified how to maintain your credentials.

What Level of Education Do You Need?

Eligibility is based on three areas: education, PM experience and formal project management education. PMI divides education into categories because it is an international organization with chapters all over the world, and recognizes that some people may have gone to college and some haven't. First identify which category you fall in, starting with education background.

For those who have a secondary degree, meaning a high school diploma, an associate's or the international equivalent, the PM experience required is a minimum of 7500 hours (5 years/60 months). In addition, you need 35 contact hours of formal project management training based on PMI's standards as outlined in the PMBOK guide (Project Management Body of Knowledge). Testing comes directly out of that formal training, and the contact hours represents physical contact with instructors. Many online programs do not qualify as a result.

If you have a four-year bachelor's degree or the global equivalent, some of the training you received earning your degree counts towards eligibility requirements. A minimum of 4500 hours (3 years/36 months) of PM experience is required in addition to 35 contact hours of formal education.

Hands-on Experience a Must!

In addition to the education and practical experience required, you also need to have managed projects from beginning to end. If neither your experience nor education qualifies you for credentialing, there is an alternative certification that you can learn about in the handbook on the pmi.org site: the CAPM, a certification earned prior to or as you are preparing for the PMP certification.

I'm excited for those of you who are on this path. We've found that credentialing helps job applicants stand out to employers, and it certainly trains you to manage projects better.
