PMP Certification Requirements


The Project Management Institute (PMI) was founded in 1969 and is accredited as an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards developer. It started offering the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam in 1984. This certification is growing in popularity and demand in all areas of business.

PMI experienced explosive growth in membership over the last few years, and more and more organizations are recognizing the importance of project management certification.

PMP certification is to recognize an individual's demonstrated understanding of the knowledge and skills to lead and direct project teams to complete the project successfully. When you achieve your PMP certification, you can say that you have passed an international exam designed to prove your knowledge of project management.

To take this exam, you must meet the requirements as outlined by PMI. The current requirement can be separate to two categories. First category, you must have degree holder with 4,500 contact hours on leading and directing the project. Second category, you must have diploma with 7,500 contact hours on leading and directing the project. Both categories will require having 35 hours of project management education.

The PMP examination is comprised of 200 multiple choice questions. Out of 200 questions, 25 are considered pretest questions. Pretest questions do not affect the score and are used examinations as an effective way to test the future examination questions. The allocation time to complete the exam is 4 hours. Based on analysis, participant usually able to answer all question in 3.5 hours with 0.5 hours for review the answer and take a break.

You can submit an application to PMI to take this exam either by mail or online. It is encourage submitting online if possible as PMI response time is faster for online submission. You will receive a notification with eligibility code to authorizing you to make an appointment to take the exam. Be aware that you may be subject to an audit for you application if you has been selected.

The exam is usually offered a computer based exam format, but it might different depending on the country you are in.
